 IELTS Writing Task 2 – 28 May 2022 Evening Slot

Many students choose to take a gap year before starting university, to travel or gain work experience. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Having a gap prior to enrollment in the university is supposed to be beneficial therefore many young boys and girls prefer to have one year break to acquire practical experience and explore the world. I believe this trend has more positive aspects than negatives.

To commence with ,  Many pupils opt to involve themselves in practical experience or travel difference places which serve many benefits. They invest their precious one year to work part or full time so they could develop their understanding about they work and come to know what skills they must possess to build a better career. While travelling they come across many customs and tradition which help them see the world with difference perspectives. Furthermore, they become self-disciplined and able to decide what subject they should choose. Meeting with people from distinct background and experiences enlarges their mental horizon which is a wonderful characteristic. 

However , the negative influences of gap year cannot be overlooked. In many cases, young boys and girls find it challenging to start university because they have not studied for a year.  They are trapped in the mentality of making money or starting their own small businesses without obtaining a degree from the university. Those who have a break to travel are caught in the bad company because there is nobody to watch over them.  Sometimes students don’t acquire desired results as they have spent their time away from studies which may later impact their careers adversely.

To sum up, the merits of having a gap before enrolling in a degree from the university prevail over its demerits. However , the gap year must be used creatively and it should not distract the learners from their main goals.
